Greetings, Purposeful Hearts! We begin our purposeful thoughts today by laying some important groundwork for this whole Purposeful Heart mission I’ve undertaken. One of my primary personal goals is to be open, transparent, and straightforward with you as we consider this life we’ve been given and what we’re meant to do with it. And, if you’re going to connect with my perspectives on life and what we do with it, then you’ll need to connect to my definition of a Purposeful Heart.
Let’s break the phrase down into its parts. First, we need to address the word purposeful. So much of our society is full of reminders and “instructions” about what makes someone purposeful. Phrases like, “setting your intentions” and “reaching your potential” and “being true to yourself” all comment on how purposeful you are and whether or not you’re measuring up. My friends, I can’t let you settle for that definition of purposeful.
You are full of purpose simply because God made you. You are full of purpose because you arrived here and are present for this time period in history. You are full of purpose because God surrounded you with people who wouldn’t be the same without your influence. God designed you for the life situations that come your way because He knows that no one could handle them the way that you can. You are full of purpose – God’s purpose – and that’s why I use and love the word purposeful.
Second, we need to address the word heart. The heart is often the first and last sign of life. Its beat keeps time as we make our way through one day at a time. While I love considering the steady companion we have in the heartbeat, I love even more the deeper commentaries on the heart. To have heart means that you’re working from the core of who you are – without even considering just going through the motions. It’s living from a place of unfading passion and commitment. Even more, we are happiest and flourish the most when our heart is connected to the life, love, experiences, and memories of other hearts – fellow earth travelers also living with heart.
So, what is a Purposeful Heart? It’s someone who knows he or she is here for a God-blessed reason and joyfully brings their gifts, passions, and actions to meet the world’s needs. It’s a full embrace of calling and vocation. It’s the one who says, “Here am I, Lord! Send me!”
