READER CHALLENGE: Fun with Metaphors

Good day, Purposeful Hearts! You all know by now that I love a good metaphor. I can’t help myself. They do such a great job of taking familiar, relatable items, feelings, or processes and helping us explain something unfamiliar or otherwise difficult to describe! So, I think it’s time that we had a bit more fun together as we celebrate the power of metaphors!

Together, you say? Yes, together. This week’s blog post serves as a call to action - real action, not metaphorical! After reading this post – immediately after – I want you to share with me a favorite metaphor. That’s it! Post a metaphor in the comments. Choose one that you’ve found yourself using to describe your life, your feelings, your frustrations, or your joys.

What happens after that is even more fun! Via your metaphor, you will be a “guest” in my blog. I will feature the metaphors I receive in blog posts that address how they can be understood in light of living with a purposeful heart. Keep it clean and classy, people!

I’ll even get us started! When I was growing up, my grandma would often sing “You Are My Sunshine” to me. That memory still brings tears to my eyes, because she still sang it to me throughout her decades-long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. I treasure that song because of it.

The metaphor is clear. To call someone your “sunshine” is to let them know what a blessing they are in your life. They’re a bright spot in a world of gray clouds, as the song continues. It’s a confession of love, admiration, endearment, and appreciation.

So, Purposeful Hearts, what do we do with this metaphor as we go about our business today? Well, who would you call your sunshine? Who makes you happy when the skies are gray? Do they know how important they are to you? While the song lyrics might say, “You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you,” I pray that you tell your “sunshine” exactly what they mean to you often.

How about right now? (After you share a favorite metaphor in the comments!)
