Let’s take our love of reflection at The Purposeful Heart a bit deeper today by comparing the mirrors we use in daily life for literal reflections and applying them metaphorically to living lives of purpose.
We’ll start as our typical days begin – in the bathroom, right? When we first wake up, we make the stiff journey to the bathroom while acclimating our body to movement once again. Muscles stretch. Joints crack. We sigh, yawn, and blink our eyes as they adjust to daylight. Then we have the encounter. We meet the early-morning, pre-coffee, pre-skincare routine version of ourselves in the mirror. Perhaps we sigh again.
Was that depressing? I hope not. We all have to admit that “early-morning us” is not the norm, and it doesn’t even stay around for long. It’s actionable. There’s room for positive change (here’s where you should insert your personal advertisements for all of the creams and gels that pull you together each day). The point is, we see an opportunity for improvement because we’ve confronted our reflection. We have a baseline.
How can you apply this thinking to your purposeful life? When is the last time your really stopped to consider your “early-morning you” when it comes to your character, your values, your time management, and your stewardship of God’s gifts to you? Maybe you need to “stretch” yourself more by learning a new skill. Maybe the “joints” of difficult relationships need to crack and reset with some constructive communication. Maybe you really need a big, deep sigh in the form of well-deserved rest in order to get some perspective.
Just like our early-morning selves, the creaky versions of our character, values, time, and stewardship are actionable as well. There’s room for positive change. So, today as you look in the mirror (both literally and figuratively), what do you see? Where are the opportunities to improve based on what you find in the person looking back at you?
Use this reflective time purposefully and watch your life grow! Okay, you can leave the bathroom now. See you next week when we peek into another mirror in our lives!
