I have to, I get to, or I'm blessed to?

Today’s purposeful thought for your purposeful heart involves an act of reframing. Which of the phrases in our title did you utter when your feet hit the floor this morning?

If you’re feeling pressed down by the drudgery of daily tasks or the burden of burnout lately, your thoughts likely drifted toward a sense of obligation and you said, “I have to” about today’s work. Perhaps you’re a savvy “reframer” and you know better than to take that kind of attitude with you to work, so you said, “I feel like I have to, but the right answer is that I get to.” If this is you, congratulations – you’re on your way to a more positive perspective.

But here’s your challenge: saying “I get to” still makes the day (and its tasks) about you. What if we flipped this phrase even further? If we change the first phrase of our day to “I’m blessed to,” now we acknowledge that what’s coming our way is not from us, but it’s a gift. We didn’t craft the “good works prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). We didn’t “ordain all the days before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:16). We might have set the plans in our hearts, but it’s “the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21).

Whether you’re a business owner, at the bedside of a loved one, or working through a conflict with someone, can you reframe your attitude to discover how you might be blessed to have that experience? And then, can you ask yourself how you might be a blessing to others?

On our journey of developing purposeful hearts, let’s latch onto the phrase, “I’m blessed to” as we joyfully fulfill our callings and vocations in this life. The time is now to shine Jesus’ light for the world to see, and the right positive, purposeful attitude can activate some positive, purposeful steps.

What are you blessed to do today?
